Express FC head coach Morley Byekwaso faces a defining moment on Thursday, November 5, as growing frustration among the club’s supporters threatens to turn an already difficult season into a full-blown crisis. The Red Eagles, as Express FC are fondly nicknamed by their adoring fans, have managed just one victory in their opening nine StarTimes Uganda Premier League matches, a disappointing return that has left them languishing in the relegation zone and placed Byekwaso under mounting pressure. Last weekend, the frustration boiled over, with sections of Express supporters reportedly calling for the coach’s resignation following another underwhelming performance. But Byekwaso still has an opportunity to change the mood around Wankulukuku when Express host Blacks Power at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, on Thursday, November 5. It is a fixture that carries significance beyond the three points. For Express, victory could offer a much-needed lifeline, restore confidence among the supporters and give Byekwaso some breathing space. Another disappointing result, however, would only intensify questions about his ability to turn around the club’s fortunes. Express have shown that they can compete, having secured their only league victory against KCCA FC. Ironically, the Kasasiro Boys have since improved considerably and are beginning to feature in conversations around the title race, while their conquerors continue to struggle. With no reported injury concerns, Byekwaso is expected to have his full squad available as he searches for a winning formula. However, Blacks Power will not be travelling to Nakivubo simply to make up the numbers. Simon Peter Mugerwa’s charges head into the contest encouraged by their point against SC Villa last week, although they will be eager to return to winning ways after losing to NEC FC over the weekend. While Express fight to rescue their season, Vipers SC are also enduring an uncomfortable spell following the departure of head coach Denis Lavagne. The Venoms have collected just one point from their last three matches and, remarkably, are yet to register a point since John Ayala Luyinda took charge following Lavagne’s departure. Thursday’s home encounter against Lugazi FC, therefore, presents another opportunity for Vipers to arrest their slide and restore some confidence within the team. There have also been reports of proposed changes to the club’s matchday bonus arrangements, with players reportedly facing a 30 per cent deduction in the event of a draw and a 20 per cent cut following a defeat. The reported measures, if implemented, would add another layer of pressure on a team already struggling for consistency. Elsewhere, coach Sam Ssimbwa appears to be bringing some much- needed stability to URA FC. The experienced coach has guided the Tax Collectors to back- to-back victories, offering hope that the club can gradually move away from the relegation conversation. URA travel to Bukedea today, Wednesday (November 4), to face struggling Kataka FC before another demanding assignment against Kitara FC on Saturday. However, Ssimbwa is not getting carried away by the recent improvement, insisting that survival remains his immediate priority. “My target was to have the team out of relegation and later I will tell what next. For now, we still have to win more games because the relegation battle is still on,” Ssimbwa said. Meanwhile, Kitara FC are expected to establish their temporary home venue this week as they prepare to host URA on Saturday, November 7. With Express searching for a response, Vipers desperate to rediscover their winning touch and URA beginning to find their feet under Ssimbwa, the coming fixtures could prove significant in shaping the early direction of the Premier League season. The post Win or bust for Morley appeared first on The Observer Media Ltd.
