Tactics Column: High alert at the back stick

Wait 5 sec.

A long overdue win at Anfield was marked by a goal, a number of other Arsenal chances, and what will go down as a famous clean sheet, all involving how the two teams defend at the back post. There were plenty of other interesting things to note on Sunday – Martin Odegaard’s role drifting across the pitch early on and Arsenal’s 20-odd minute spell of dominance midway through the second half both caught the eye – but in the latest instalment of our video series Between The Lines, I look into how Arsenal had great joy attacking the back post, and why Liverpool were never going to have the same luck at the other end. With the hosts’ defence getting narrow in their own box, Arsenal created plenty of opportunities by having the man on the far side outside that defensive block. That’s how Kai Havertz scored, it’s how he nearly tapped in from Bruno Guimaraes’ effort that flew just wide, and it’s how Noni Madueke nearly teed Havertz up with another tap-in. It’s also where Christos Tzolis was positioned as he came onto a Madueke cross and forced Alisson into the game’s standout save. Arsenal, though, have no such weakness: their combination of organisation, hunger, and (perhaps most importantly) focus meant Liverpool were never likely to find a spare man at the back post. Check out the video below for a proper breakdown of the defensive setups in those scenarios, and be sure to subscribe to the YouTube channel for more analysis as the season goes on!
