It was a memorable GI Breeders' Cup Classic for Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott, who not only won the race with Sovereignty (Into Mischief), but did so after his colt missed a key prep in the GI Jockey Club Gold Cup, having been hampered by a foot abscess. But Mott had last year's Horse of the Year back in prime condition and he won the Classic in style. To talk about Sovereignty, Knightsbridge (Nyquist), the team that helped him pull off the Breeders' Cup win, his humble roots and more, Mott joined this week's TDN Writers' Room Podcast presented by Keeneland. He was the Gainesway Guest of the Week.Mott admitted that there were times when he didn't think he would make the Breeders' Cup with Sovereignty, revealing that he was discouraged after one particular workout.“He had one breeze and I'm watching him go,” Mott said “I was on the other side of the racetrack from him, and he just went evenly across the racetrack. He didn't look like he was traveling well. He went in 'fifty-one and change' and that's about all he was going to do on that particular day. Now I've seen him go in fifty and fifty-one before, but doing it the right way. I think it's really all about how the horse is doing it, how smooth they are, how much into the bridle they are, and how well they're traveling. On that particular day, he didn't look good to me at all. Something didn't look right. And (exercise rider) Neil (Poznansky) agreed with me. He didn't like the way he felt. But he came out of it. We didn't really see anything that was out of whack on him, other than the breeze itself.”Mott persisted and, with his plan of slow and steady works, Sovereignty was able to turn the corner.Owned by Godolphin, Sovereignty has won the GI Kentucky Derby, the GI Belmont Stakes, the GI Whitney Stakes and the Classic. To Mott, that makes him one of the best horses he has ever trained, and the list includes Cigar. “Sovereignty won the big 3-year-old races, and that's something that Cigar didn't do,” Mott said. “I think they're both great horses, but they probably did different things. They, of course, both won the Breeders' Cup Classic. Sovereignty actually won the three races, the Derby, the Belmont and the Travers, that we had kind of targeted all year long.”His other Classic starter, Knightsbridge, finished third in the Classic. It was a good effort, but the consensus is that Sovereignty is simply the better horse of the two.“He's just not good enough to beat Sovereignty,” Mott said. “I don't know that he fired his best shot on Breeders' Cup Day. I believe that in his race at Monmouth and in the Pacific Classic was he was just a little bit sharper…he exploded a little bit more. I don't believe he was going to beat Sovereignty on his best day. I think he's an exceptionally good miler and he can get a mile and an eighth. Probably a mile and a quarter against a horse like Sovereignty is stretching him just a little bit.”The “Fastest Horse of the Week” was GI Breeders' Cup Sprint winner T O Elvis (Volatile) who earned a 112 Beyer Figure. The “Fastest Horse of the Week” segment is sponsored by WinStar Farm, the home of the stallion Life Is Good. The TDN Writers' Room Podcast is also sponsored by the PHBA, 1/ST TV, the KTOB, Sky Racing and West Point Thoroughbreds. The team of Randy Moss, Zoe Cadman and Bill Finley reviewed the entire Breeders' Cup two-day extravaganza, focusing on the exceptional performances from horses like T O Elvis, Hughes (Into Mischief), Deterministic (Liam's Map), Nitrogen (Medaglia d'Oro) and others. They also sang the praises of Aidan O'Brien, whose three victories gave him 24 in the Breeders' Cup, the most by any trainer and agreed that he should be inducted into the U.S. Racing Hall of Fame.To listen to the podcast, click here or to view it, click here. The post Bill Mott Joins The TDN Writers’ Room Podcast, Presented By Keeneland appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
