Mahj Mentor: a beginner app for American mahjong I built so my girlfriend could join her work group

Wait 5 sec.

Hi everyone. I'm a developer, and a while back my girlfriend told me a group at her work plays mahjong every week. She wanted to join but was too intimidated, since she'd never played and couldn't find an app or site that felt beginner friendly enough to actually teach her. So I built her one. She's now a mahj machine and plays with the group every week. She shared it with them, they had a lot of nice feedback (and a lot of requests), and eventually they bullied me into putting it on the App Store. It's called Mahj Mentor. The idea is an easy, low-pressure place to learn, where nobody's waiting on you and mistakes don't matter. Some of what's in it: Short lessons that start with what the tiles even are and work up to the Charleston, jokers, calling and scoring, with a quick check after each one Full practice games against patient bots, plus beginner drills and a daily challenge Games with friends that work like Words With Friends: invite someone with a link or code and take your turn whenever it suits you (there are preset reactions for a little table talk). You can also start a game with someone new. Use your own card: take a photo of the card your group plays from and it gets redrawn in large print, with every hand shown in tiles. The practice games use the app's own card of hands; the photo feature is for the card your group actually plays. Custom tiles: send a couple of photos and a few words (your dog, your garden, your favorite flower) and get a tile set made just for you. Pick your tile style and mat, and it works with your phone turned sideways Pricing, so nobody has to dig: it's free to download and has no ads. The lessons, bot games, beginner drills, daily challenge and games with friends are all free. There's an optional Plus subscription ($1.99 a month or $17.99 a year) for extra coaching, like hints at the table, a Charleston coach and the hands you're closest to. A finished custom tile set is a one-time purchase of a few dollars. iPhone and Android: https://mahjmentor.app If you try it and something's confusing, or there's a feature you'd like, comment here or send me a message. I'm happy to add things. submitted by /u/TPGIV [link] [comments]
