Intelligent Terminal 0.3: A new way to manage your tabs and agents

Wait 5 sec.

This is the biggest update to Intelligent Terminal since we launched. This release introduces the new sidebar for managing your tabs and agents, including recent agent sessions and agents running in other terminal windows. You also get rich tab information you can customize, global search, and a filter for focusing on your agents. Intelligent Terminal now detects installed agent CLIs and adds them to the new tab menu, while headless mode keeps selected tabs running after you close the terminal. You can grab the update from the Microsoft Store or by heading to the release page on GitHub. Let's dive in!Introducing the sidebarWe wanted a richer, easier-to-read experience for working with agents, and we heard that the classic tab bar needed more room for the context agent workflows bring. The new sidebar expands your tabs into a vertical view where agents and shells are easier to scan, manage, and return to. Every tab has room for more than a truncated title, with agent CLI sessions and terminals together in the same list. These are still your tabs, so everything works the way it already does: click to select, × to close, drag to reorder, right-click for the tab menu. Here's what it brings that's new:Live agent status on every tab, so you can see what an agent is up to without opening it, with an attention dot on any tab waiting on youPinning by right-clicking a tab to pin the tab you're watching at the top of the sidebarKeep a tab running in headless mode by right-clicking a tab > headless mode even after you close the windowSplit panes nested under their tab, so you always have visibility into what each pane is doing, and jumping to it directlyGlobal search across your open tabs and your recent agent sessions at onceAn agent filter to cut the list down to just your agent sessionsRecent agent sessions in a collapsible section under your open tabs, including agents running in other terminal windowsThe sidebar is on by default. If you prefer the classic horizontal tabs, right-click any tab and select Switch to horizontal tabs, or change the layout under Settings > Appearance > Tab Layout. You can switch back to the sidebar anytime, resize it, or collapse it with the sidebar button or Ctrl+Shift+S.Acrylic theming is also on by default for the sidebar. If you prefer a solid background, turn off Use acrylic material in the tab row under Settings > Appearance.Rich tabsTabs show status and their current working directory by default. When a tab is running an agent CLI, the shell icon swaps for the agent's icon and the status reads the latest thing the agent is doing, so you can tell whether it's working, waiting on your input, or asking to run a tool without opening it.You can swap either field out for something you'd rather see by clicking the filter icon in the tab header:Agent status to see what the agent is doingCurrent working directory to see where the tab is workingGit information such as repository, branch, or changes to have glanceable repository informationPick up to two fields from the filter menu in the sidebar. Turning one on swaps another out so your tabs stay readable.Search your tabs and your past sessionsType to narrow the list as you go. Search is global, so it looks through the tabs you have open in your window and the agent sessions you have open across all windows and sessions you've already closed, at the same time. Whether the thing you're after is running right now or finished yesterday, it shows up in a single quick search.Filter down to just your agentsOpen the filter menu and turn on Agents only to cut the list down to the tabs running an agent CLI. Turn it off to bring all your terminal tabs back.Find recent agents across your terminal windowsOpen the filter menu and turn on Recent agent sessions to add a collapsible list under your open tabs in the sidebar. It shows prior agent sessions and agents running in other terminal windows, with their title, working directory, and relative timestamp. Select one to reopen recent work in a new tab or jump focus straight to an agent already open and running elsewhere.Start your agent from the new tab menuIntelligent Terminal already detects supported agent CLIs installed on your machine and now it creates profiles for them automatically. Open the new tab menu and start GitHub Copilot CLI, Claude, or another detected agent the same way you start PowerShell or any other terminal profile.Keep work running in headless modeA long agent task or a long build used to die the moment you closed the terminal. Headless mode lets it continue in the background.Right-click a tab and select Turn on headless mode. You can close the terminal and walk away while the session keeps running in the background until the machine stops.Easy to find: tabs running in headless mode show up in the sidebar will running and the system tray when there are no active windows. Agent sessions (agent CLIs running in a tab) that are in headless mode will always show up under your Recent agent sessions in the sidebar when they are closed.A huge thanks to our communityThank you for constantly providing feedback and helping shape Intelligent Terminal.
