Jerry Jones’ $23bn can’t buy the right coach for the failing Dallas Cowboys

Wait 5 sec.

Jerry Jones is worth an estimated $23 billion. His Dallas Cowboys are the richest sports team in the world — worth more than Manchester United, Real Madrid and the Los Angeles Lakers — and valued at a NFL-high $17bn.Brian Schottenheimer is 10-14-1 since being hired by Jerry JonesGettySo why is the owner of so much wealth so opposed to hiring the best and brightest for the most important position in his organization?Of course, Jones would say that the No. 1 job belongs to him. He’s the only team owner/president/general manager with three Super Bowl rings in the NFL, after all.But there was the $23bn Jones this week, yapping on local radio yet again and telling everyone listening that, really, he wasn’t a cheap guy.“In the NFL – this is after years of looking at all the teams and all the coaches – there is no, there is zero correlation between how much you pay a coach, or how many coaches you have, as to winning,” Jones told 105.3 FM. “There is no correlation. And that’s a random sample of years and all 32 teams involved. So put that in your hopper and smoke it.”Thou doth protest too much, Jerry. The struggling Cowboys are 3-5 and once again one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL.They’ve already lost to John Harbaugh’s NFC East-leading New York Giants, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Arizona Cardinals.A better constructed and coached team wins all three of those games.Jones has $23 billion but he keeps missing on Dallas Cowboys coachesGettyPressure is mounting on Dak Prescott and the 3-5 CowboysGettyBut Jones’ Cowboys might miss the playoffs again, and the owner/president/GM spent this week insisting that status quo should remain in Dallas, despite not reaching the NFC Championship game in 31 years.Only Jones’ Cowboys kept Jason Garrett as head coach for plodding 10 seasons, despite Garrett going 2-3 in the playoffs. He hasn’t been hired by an NFL team in a position of coaching authority since.Only Jones’ Cowboys picked up Mike McCarthy after he was coldly discarded by the Green Bay Packers. And only Jones chose Brian Schottenheimer, who’s currently 10-14-1 coaching the Cowboys and could be coaching for his job in 2027. “You can be pretty creative in hiring your coaches,” Jones said.“You can be creative sometime when you don’t even know you’re hiring the coaches. And so I’ve had some good experience of hiring people who have never been in the NFL.”NFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?Jones is so insulated by his billions and billions of dollars he’s unable to recognize NFL reality.Troy Aikman could at least shake up the Cowboys and instill Super Bowl urgency to a franchise that has frustrated and disappointed its fanbase decade after decade.Jones is worth $23bn but he’s continually failed to find and buy the right head coach. The only person to blame for missing over and over again in Dallas is the person running the Cowboys by himself.Sign up for talkSPORT Stateside, the YouTube channel dedicated to passionate US Sports fans.
