Cement Truck Cleaning Blamed For Pollution Across Wied Qirda Valley

A long stretch of Wied Qirda in Ħaż-Żebbuġ has allegedly been polluted by cement residue from trucks being cleaned at a nearby facility. The Malta Ranger Unit (MRU) raised the alarm after receiving reports that cement truck cleaning activities were contaminating the valley.According to the environmental organisation, rangers visited the area and identified what appeared to be the source of the pollution. The Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) was subsequently alerted, with the MRU saying it had been informed that the authority was investigating the case and had contacted the party allegedly responsible. However, the organisation warned that several people had come forward claiming this was not the first time such pollution had occurred. These reports have raised questions about whether previous action was taken and what measures will now be introduced to prevent further incidents. The MRU is urging the ERA to intervene and ensure the activity does not continue until the issue has been resolved.“The one causing this should stop the cleaning of machinery until the issue is resolved,” the organisation insisted.“No other solution is acceptable.”The extent of the environmental damage has not yet been independently established, and no enforcement action has been confirmed.•
