With the era of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp over, who are the current outstanding managers in the Premier League?Well, talkSPORT’s Max Scott has managed to pick out who he believes are the leading bosses currently in charge in the top flight.Guardiola is one of the greatest Premier League managers of all-time – but who are the best right now?GettyIn the latest edition of his weekly Mount Rushmore or Less series, he has whittled his list down to the top five in the division. But why five when Mount Rushmore famously features just four of the most influential US presidents? That’s why it’s Mount Rushmore or Less – sometimes, four simply just isn’t enough. So, here are the best current Premier League managers…Arteta on his way to all-timer status“It’s simple, it’s obvious, it’s Mikel Arteta.”Scott selected Arsenal manager Arteta to take a spot in his list, lauding him for his achievements amid constant backlash.“Like him or loathe him, like their brand of football or not, Arteta has been an absolute revolutionary force for Arsenal,” he added.“It’s his first senior job in management, taking a club where fans were fuming at the Kroenkes, fuming at what had happened at the back end of Arsene Wenger’s tenure.“And in a time of Man City’s fraudulent dominance, he finds a way to win the Premier League title for the first time in 22 years.“Yes, there’s an argument he should have done it earlier, and I think the accusations of Arsenal’s mentality or the language of them ‘bottling it’ has truth to it – but he put all of that to bed.“The strength of feeling that Arteta has managed to claw back, the passion within the fanbase, has to be respected, it’s absolutely incredible.Arteta led Arsenal to their first Premier League title in 22 years last season and could well have his side on track for another this termGettyMax Scott's Mount Rushmore or lessTop five greatest midfield trios in Premier League historyThe best Premier League striker in each decadeTop five greatest Premier League signings in historyThe most-heated rivalriesThe best football fansIconic things that should make a comeback in modern football“People might not like his football, but it’s effective. “Arsenal should have won the Champions League last season and they could well go and win it this season. They’re a fabulous, effective football team.“What he’s achieved, he doesn’t get enough respect for, as people might dislike his antics on the touchline, dislike fans on social media or don’t like their brand of football.”He then concluded: “Arguably, if he carries on at this rate, he will be in the conversation soon as one of the best Premier League managers of all time.”English football’s Robin HoodUp next is ‘the man who pulls rabbits out of hats’, Unai Emery.Scott explained: “Aston Villa has been created in the image of Emery. Villa boss Emery achieved European glory with Aston Villa and has them challenging the Big Six despite huge losses to his squadGetty“He took over the football club when they were threatened with relegation back to the Championship and the fact that he has managed to make them European champions once again, regulars in the Champions League, getting Big Six scalps, is probably one of the best stories in the Premier League in recent years.“He’s done this with two hands tied behind his back with these draconian financial regulations limiting what Aston Villa can do. The ladder’s been pulled up by Chelsea and Man City.“Unai Emery is like a freedom fighter, like a Robin Hood, stealing from the rich and giving to the poor Midlands fans, who have been bereft of a team that once conquered Europe.“He’s gone and done it again and I know it’s the Europa League, but the fact he’s managed to do it is absolutely unbelievable.“And this season, regaining the energy to reinvent and reinvigorate a side that had their heart ripped out of it – Emi Martinez, Morgan Rogers, Youri Tielemans, Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa.“The fact they are playing so much brilliant football now with new signings is all down to Unai Emery.”What is Mount Rushmore? The faces of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln are carved into the stone in South Dakota, chosen for their representation of the most important events in the United States’ history. As a result, fans use the idea to create their own version to list the most influential or iconic games and people that define their selected categories. Here, though, talkSPORT argues five is not enough, so more or less this is Mount Rushmore.A controversial pickNext up in this Mount Rushmore or Less is former Crystal Palace and now Nottingham Forest boss Oliver Glasner.“This shouldn’t be controversial, and if I wasn’t saying this as a lifelong Forest fan, I think people would probably have no issue with it,” Scott began.“Oliver Glasner is one of the best Premier League managers right now, he has to be in it.“Not because of what he’s done at Forest where wins have been hard to come by – but he can’t finish Liam Delap‘s dinner, so we won’t blame it on him.“The only silverware Crystal Palace had was in their canteen when Glasner came along and he’s gone and got them the Conference League, the FA Cup… such a storied history of that competition.“Just because he might have got off to a slow start at Forest, it doesn’t take away what he achieved at Crystal Palace. A side that had no major silverware in their history.Glasner has made a slow start at Forest, but his achievements with Crystal Palace have done wonders for his reputation in EuropeGetty“Everyone was shocked he came to Forest and yes, he probably came to Forest as he was getting paid as one of the best five managers in the division. But it’s because he is.“If he’d have gone to Bayern Munich or a big European club like Manchester United, nobody would have been surprised… we’ve got to put respect on his name and we can’t look at recency bias.”The antidote to the ‘boring’ Premier League“This is where it gets difficult because we’ve not got some of these huge names at big football clubs.”Scott admitted that after the first three, managers were harder to select, but he found another in Andoni Iraola. He explained: “What he achieved at Bournemouth, qualifying them for Europe, absolutely unbelievable.“Some people will have said: ‘Well he’s not managed at a big club’. He has now, he’s at Liverpool and the fact that someone like Liverpool went for Iraola, not, for example, a Fabian Hurzeler, says everything that you need.Scott thinks Iraola’s entertaining style and impressive start with Liverpool means he has to be one of the best in the Premier LeagueGetty“If you need big club bias to validate how important and how good a manager is, well you’ve got it, because Liverpool employed him.“The brand of football he plays, the intensity of which he plays, the attacking nature of his sides, makes it one of the most entertaining brands of football in the Premier League in an age that the Premier League can be accused of being a little bit boring.“Andoni Iraola is the antidote to that.”Andrews and Brentford ‘a breath of fresh air’Honourable mentions were handed out for Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca and Brighton manager Hurzeler. However, Scott landed on a different man to finish up his Mount Rushmore or Less, saying: “I’ve got to give it to Keith Andrews.“Last season, he was pound-for-pound manager of the season. At the start, everyone was laughing at Brentford employing a set-piece coach, everybody had them to go down.Brentford manager Andrews was doubted by almost everyone, but he has quickly become one of the best managers in the top flight with BrentfordGetty“And they were a point or two off European qualification, and this season they have been a breath of fresh air.“Notwithstanding the pressure that was on him, but he succeeded Brentford’s greatest ever manager in Thomas Frank and he’s taken them, no doubt, to another level.“He’s got Igor Thiago a Brazil call-up and made him look like one of the best strikers in the Premier League.“I love the way he communicates, I love what he’s building at Brentford, that it’s disrupting the establishment.“I sincerely hope they qualify for European football, I think last season, not getting it could have been a blessing in disguise.“It’s all down to Keith Andrews, I think he’s magnificent…I think he will get picked up by a bigger club, but he’s done a terrific job and rightly deserves to be in the Mount Rushmore-or-less.”
