Lorin Scicluna’s defence lawyers have confirmed that his eight-year prison sentence fell within the legal parameters available to the court, as they prepare to discuss a possible appeal with their client.Speaking to TVM News outside court on Thursday morning, defence lawyer Edward Gatt addressed the sentencing following an error in the Attorney General’s indictment. The judge had explained that Scicluna could ordinarily have faced a maximum of 12 years in prison. However, the indictment incorrectly listed the maximum sentence as nine years, meaning the court was bound by that lower limit.Asked about the mistake, Gatt said “the issue of the error” created parameters that the court was obliged to respect.“The sentence was within the parameters available to the court,” he added.Gatt also confirmed that the legal team would now consult Scicluna about whether he wished to challenge the outcome.“We will discuss with our client whether he wishes to appeal, either on the question of the guilty verdict or even the sentence handed down by the court today,” he said.Asked whether the eight-year sentence was fair or excessive, Gatt explained that this too would need to be discussed with Scicluna before deciding how to proceed. The former AFM soldier was sentenced after being found guilty of grievously injuring May Malimi and driving without registration plates. He was acquitted earlier this week of murdering Lassana Cisse Souleymane in 2019 and of the attempted murder charges he faced. No decision on an appeal has yet been announced.•
