Electric vehicle maker Nio has surpassed 130 million cumulative battery swaps performed through its vast network of rapid-energy stations. With next-generation swap architecture deploying to service vehicles across its three brands, the rate of swaps is accelerating throughout China. A vehicle was exchanged for a charged pack with seamless automation through Nio’s energy replenishment network on November 3 at 6:53:21 p.m. Beijing Time. This milestone comes exactly 88 days after the battery swap network recorded its 120 millionth swap on August 7. During this time, swap stations handled over 110,000 battery swaps every day, meaning a Nio, Onvo, or Firefly car completed a battery swap every 0.77 seconds on average.Rapid network densification and highway coverageAs of November 3, Nio operated 4,236 battery swap stations across China, up by 230 locations over the 88-day period. Alongside these automated swap stations, the company runs 5,556 charging stations comprising 32,261 individual charging piles. In total, Nio operated 9,792 combined charging and swap stations throughout China, giving it the largest charging and swapping infrastructure footprint in the industry. In tandem, Nio expanded its city coverage through network densification. According to the company, 84.5 percent of users now have at least one swap station within 3 kilometers of their home or workplace, up from 80.1 percent recorded on August 7. Furthermore, Nio runs an extensive highway corridor across China by installing 1,077 highway swap stations connecting 550 cities. The network is configured along 9 north-south routes, 11 east-west routes, and 16 major urban clusters. Nio has also equipped 92 scenic driving routes with charging and swap facilities and aims to reach 100 routes by the end of 2026.Multi-brand compatibility and operational efficiencyThe growth of the network accelerated following the deployment of its fifth-generation battery swap stations. The new platform accommodates different wheelbases, allowing vehicles from all three brands – Nio, Onvo, and Firefly – to share the same swapping facilities. The fifth-generation stations first became operable across cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou.Cumulative electricity delivered through automated swaps reached 6.89 billion kilowatt-hours. Nio estimates that swapping has saved users approximately 110 million hours compared with standard plug-in charging. The first commercial Nio swap station opened in Shenzhen on May 20, 2018, and the company completed its 100 millionth swap on February 6 after 2,819 days in service. Management views its expanding charging and swapping network as an essential part of its product competitiveness, noting that the infrastructure has achieved economies of scale and serves as a major driver of vehicle sales growth.
