Hi all! I got married on October 3rd (yay!!) and am starting the process of changing my name through SSA. I had loads of trouble submitting the online form using the information on my marriage license, but I finally got it to go through after changing the spelling of the city. I'm posting this in hopes I can save someone else the headache in the future because no one at SSA or Vital Records could help me. Here's what to know: Wait at least 30 days after turning your signed marriage license in For the issue date: You must put the filing date instead (the day you turned your signed license in). If not, you'll get an error saying the issue date can't be before the marriage date. City of marriage: Despite the Recorder of Deeds using "St. Louis City," SSA will only accept your application if you use: Saint Louis City Marriage record state file #: This is the 6-digit number printed at the top of your marriage license Date of recordation: The date you turned your signed license in (same as issue date) Issuing agency/custodian of record: Recorder of Deeds Appointment needed: Despite all resources stating you can complete the entire process online, including a form from SSA given to you with your license, you will still have to schedule an in person appointment to finalize everything. You'll be prompted to do that after your application is verified Hopefully this helps someone in the future!! submitted by /u/alixunknown to r/StLouis [link] [comments]
