The 2027 U.S. Open Cup will feature a major shift in club involvement. All 27 U.S.-based MLS clubs will compete in the annual tournament, the league announced Wednesday. It will mark a return for all MLS clubs after the league split its involvement between the Leagues Cup and Open Cup over the last few years. The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup connects all leagues, clubs and fans in a unique way,” said MLS Executive Vice President of Sporting and Matchday Nelson Rodriguez. “For MLS clubs, it’s a chance to write a special chapter in the tournament’s history and earn qualification to the Concacaf Champions Cup.”MLS clubs will enter the 2027 U.S. Open Cup in the Round of 64 in July following the first round. They will receive hosting priority for their opening match of the competition. As MLS prepares for a 2027-28 shift into a new summer-to-spring competition calendar, their clubs’ involvement in the tournament has been based according to that. In addition, U.S. Open Cup game day rosters are expanding from 18 to 20 players, and MLS clubs may select from any contracted first-team, MLS NEXT Pro, and academy players.Following the Round of 64, a live draw will be held to reveal the matchups and hosting scenarios for the Round of 32 and Round of 16. The Round of 32 will be played on September 14-15 will be confirmed at a later date. The Quarterfinal round is slated for November 23-24, Semifinal round on December 1 and the Final on December 15.There will once again be an MLS club in this year’s final with the Colorado Rapids, St. Louis CITY SC, Columbus Crew, and Orlando City all set for semifinal action later this month.
