Folarin Balogun’s Deadline Day move to Everton fell apart in the final stages on Tuesday night and Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro confirmed why. Balogun looked set to make a £40 million move to the Toffees, making the move back to English Football where he began his professional career. However, the U.S. Men’s National Team forward did not sign with Everton despite the Premier League club putting in a deal sheet to get his transfer finalized. Earlier on Tuesday, Everton was reportedly worried about Balogun’s health and whether they would follow through with the transfer entirely. AS Monaco entered Deadline Day planning to sell either Balogun or midfielder Lamine Camara but instead ended up watching both of their proposed moves fall through, putting the Ligue 1 club in a financial worry for the 2026-27 campaign. Scuro took to the podium on Wednesday and provided an update on why Balogun had a change of heart and decided against the move to Merseyside. “I signed the contract,” Scuro said. “Everton signed the contract. At the last moment, the player decided not to sign. And basically, [Folarin] Balogun’s allegation is that I’m not feeling well because of the way the club treated me. I’m not feeling well because Everton’s medical department raised doubts about my future or my health. I have nothing [no health problem], so I’m not comfortable signing a long contract here.” Balogun will now head back to Monaco, seeking to get back to playing under new manager Felipe Luis. The American forward has not featured under Luis yet while 20-year-old Paris Brunner has scored four goals in four appearances as the club’s starting No. 9. Monaco is unbeaten so far this summer, advancing to the UEFA Conference League’s proper league phase while also registering back-to-back shutout victories in Ligue 1 play. Balogun could potentially move again during the January Transfer Window, but remains a Monaco player at least for the next four months. Monaco has three league matches before the September-October international break, starting with consecutive road trips to Paris Saint-Germain and Strasbourg.
