Letters to The Editor — September 3, 2026 - The HinduPublished - September 03, 2026 12:24 am ISTThe north-south lensThe main article (Editorial page, September 2) risks turning a complex federal question into a simplistic north-versus-south narrative. India’s political influence has never been determined by geography alone; it reflects population, electoral mandates, governance, economic contribution and the ability of States to build national coalitions. The southern States continue to exercise considerable political, economic and institutional influence, while several leaders from the region have shaped national policy. Portraying elected southern governments as “supplicant” or “submissive” is subjective and needlessly polarising. Delimitation deserves rigorous constitutional debate, but framing it primarily as northern domination may deepen regional divisions rather than strengthen India’s federal compact.Venkat Parthasarathy,HyderabadAusterity callThe call to citizens of the country to avoid unnecessary foreign travel and destination weddings abroad to conserve foreign exchange would carry greater weight if accompanied by restraint from those at the top. Overseas travel by national leaders may often be necessary in the public interest, but when citizens are asked to limit their foreign expenditure, similar prudence from those in positions of authority would strengthen the message. Leadership is not only about asking citizens to sacrifice, but also about setting an example.Tharcius S. Fernando,ChennaiFootball’s great artistLegend Lionel Messi’s retirement from international football marks the end of one of modern sport’s most extraordinary chapters. For two decades, he transformed football into an art form, carrying Argentina’s expectations through years of heartbreak and criticism. He leaves the international stage not only as a statistical giant, but also as a symbol of humility, grace and vision.R.
