SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – If Book'em Danno (Bucchero) doesn't get a prep race before the Breeders' Cup, you won't see him in the $2-million GI Sprint on Oct. 31 at Keeneland. And, right now, trainer Derek Ryan really doesn't know if the 5-year-old gelding will have time to make a race before then.Book'em Danno, the even-money morning-line favorite, was scratched from last Saturday's GI Forego Stakes at Saratoga after getting cast in his stall. Because he was showing slight lameness and was not 100% right on Saturday morning, the track's regulatory vet scratched him for safety and Book'em Danno was placed on the vets' list. After getting Book'em Danno back to his base at Monmouth Park, Ryan was making plans for last year's champion sprinter to run in the GIII Vosburgh at Belmont Park on Sept. 26.The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act (HISA) rules state that if a horse is on the vets' list, it faces a mandatory stay of 14 days before being able to have a supervised workout or removal.Ryan is concerned he might not be able to make the Vosburgh and if he can't make that–or the GII Phoenix Stakes at Keeneland on Oct 2–he won't take on the imposing Englishman (Maxfield) in the Breeders' Cup.“If he doesn't get a run before the Breeders' Cup, we are not going to run,” Ryan said by phone from New Jersey. “Englishman, to me, is the best 3-year-old in the country. He is a serious, serious horse. I don't want to take that sucker on if we're not 110 percent because he is a beast. He is the best horse I have seen in a long time.”Englishman, a 'TDN Rising Star, presented by Hagyard' trained by Cherie DeVaux and owned by C R K Stable, has won three of four starts this year by a combined 17 lengths. He won the GI H. Allen Jerkens Memorial by 3 3/4 lengths on Travers Day.Book'em Danno's schedule this year was made for him to get to the Breeders' Cup Sprint, a race Ryan skipped last year. He has run three times this year and has two wins and a second.Last year, Book'em Danno raced five times and won four of them. For his career, Book'em Danno, owned by Atlantic Six Racing LLC, has 12 wins, four seconds and a third in 19 starts.“We've never had any issues with him,” said Ryan, who plans to jog Book'em Danno on Thursday. “Never had any issues with him. He was doing better than ever; his last two works were the best I have ever seen him breeze. We campaigned him lightly because we wanted to go to the Breeders' Cup and then to Saudi next year. If we run out of time, we run out of time. There is always next year.”The post Breeders’ Cup May be in Doubt for Book’em Danno appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
