Two injured sea turtles are receiving treatment after being rescued in Malta within little more than 24 hours, with both having become entangled in fishing material.Nature Trust Malta said the first turtle, named Gerbulin, was initially spotted around one kilometre off the coast near Ta’ Marija Cave.Volunteers went out searching by boat but were initially unable to locate the turtle. Thankfully, the person who first raised the alarm later spotted Gerbulin again and managed to bring the animal safely ashore.Fishing line and other material were found tangled around Gerbulin’s flipper, alongside wounds to the shell and signs that fishing line had also been swallowed. The turtle is now receiving veterinary treatment.Then, at around 5:30am the following morning, reports came in of another entangled turtle near the ferry berthing area at Ċirkewwa.After disappearing from sight, the turtle was spotted again several hours later and brought ashore by someone on a jet ski. Named Dominika, she was found with a severely swollen flipper after the material wrapped around it had already been removed.Nature Trust warned people not to attempt to remove fishing line or netting themselves, explaining that material can become deeply embedded in tissue and hidden injuries may be made worse if handled incorrectly.Both Gerbulin and Dominika are now in professional care, with rescuers hoping they can eventually make a full recovery.Anyone who spots an injured or endangered wild animal can contact the Wildlife Rescue Team Malta on 99999505.Here’s hoping Gerbulin and Dominika make a speedy recovery.•
