Opposition leader Alex Borg has called on police to immediately investigate third parties who emerged during Yorgen Fenech’s trial, as questions continue to mount following his acquittal.Speaking ahead of Friday’s extraordinary parliamentary debate, Borg pointed towards Judge Edwina Grima’s decision to refer testimony and material concerning third parties to police for possible further action.“The Police must investigate all of this immediately,” Borg said, arguing that the judge’s decision demonstrates the gravity of the situation Malta now faces.Borg questioned whether authorities had done everything possible to uncover the full truth surrounding Daphne Caruana Galizia’s assassination, saying that nine years later the country is still asking who ordered her murder.The PN leader said that while the Opposition deliberately exercised caution throughout Fenech’s trial, the verdict means attention must now turn towards what further investigations will take place.Borg also announced that during Friday’s urgent parliamentary debate, the PN will table the recommendations of the Daphne Caruana Galizia Public Inquiry, alongside proposals for legislative reform.He called on the government to support their implementation and said institutions, police, journalists and public officials must be able to carry out their work “without fear or favour”.“Malta cannot close this chapter until it has done everything possible to uncover the whole truth,” Borg concluded.This angle is more immediate and less procedural/political-party PR than leading on tabling recommendations.•
