Andrew Caruana Galizia has issued a powerful reaction to Yorgen Fenech’s acquittal, insisting that the jury’s verdict does not change what he believes the evidence presented during the trial showed.Recalling the day his mother Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated, Andrew said someone had told him he may have to accept never knowing who was behind her murder.“My family and I could not live with that. We needed the truth so that we could have justice. And we needed justice so that we could live with the truth.”Following Fenech’s 8-1 acquittal, Andrew argued that the prosecution had presented overwhelming evidence against him and rejected suggestions that stronger evidence could emerge implicating somebody else.“We know who ordered my mother’s murder. The evidence is overwhelming,” he wrote, making clear his own view of the evidence despite the jury finding Fenech not guilty.Andrew also strongly criticised the jury’s acceptance of Fenech’s version of events, saying he could not pretend that a verdict erased what he had personally seen and heard throughout the proceedings.“There is a reason trials are held in open court. So that we can all judge for ourselves whether justice has been served or betrayed.”“I am not the criminal court. I have no power to condemn a man to prison,” he continued. “I am therefore under no obligation to pretend that a verdict can erase what I have seen and heard with my own eyes and ears.”He ended his message with a direct appeal: “The truth must lead to justice.”•
