Trump is selling ‘Lake America’ hats. Then shoppers saw the jaw-dropping price

Wait 5 sec.

President Donald Trump‘s decision to rename Lake Ontario is still working its way through after he signed the order last week. Trump has the authority to direct the executive branch to use the new name and mapping services such as Google Maps have already made the switch for US users.  The renaming came amid an ongoing feud with Canada, and Trump has said the country had been “ripping us off for a long time on trade,” according to HuffPost. Trump can direct the executive branch to use the new name, but cannot force other countries or private entities to adopt it. Now the rebrand has moved into retail. Trump’s official store has started selling $55 “Lake America” hats in red and blue. The product description leans into the timing of the whole thing, reading, “All it takes is a good pen to make the Great Lakes greater. This classic high-crown hat remains a presidential favorite, and this time, Lake America shares a vision for the unlimited potential of what is on the horizon.” The $55 price tag has people talking As for the price, the one-size-fits-all adjustable hat costs more than several professional sports team hats. The one-size-fits-all adjustable hat runs $5 more than a fitted Major League Baseball on-field team hat, $15 more than a snap-back National Basketball Association team hat and $8 more than a National Football League adjustable team hat. Anyone whose order comes in under $125 also pays another $10 for shipping. The comment section under the story leaned mocking, and not subtly. One reply ran with the pricing angle and imagined where it could all lead: “If this president plays his cards right, he could be selling orange jumpsuits from prison. Pink jumpsuits for girls. $33.00 Orange jumpsuits for men. $42.00.”  BREAKING: Trump sells “Lake America” hat after executive order to rename Lake Ontario pic.twitter.com/Gw4bnVEtGt— Kalshi (@Kalshi) September 4, 2026 Another brought up past merchandise complaints, writing that “the hats will arrive at the same time as the trump phones that minions ordered but never received,” and joking that for “an extra $25, they’ll throw in a $1 trump coin.” A third comment kept it short: “The Trump swamp.” The lake dispute sits inside a wider trade standoff that hasn’t cooled off. After tariff negotiations collapsed, Trump imposed 50% tariffs on certain Canadian goods, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he would match that “dollar for dollar,” a back-and-forth that has kept both countries’ trade relationship on edge. The name change is part of an ongoing feud between Trump and Canada. For now, the store says demand is high. The listing tells buyers, “Due to high demand, please allow 10-15 business days to ship.” Whether that demand holds once people register the shipping fee and the sports-hat comparison is still an open question.
