It is surprising that some of the States with high per capita income have lagged behind in bridging the gender gap. There has been considerable evidence to suggest that greater women’s participation results in better outcomes for economic and social development. These high per capita States could have benefited from greater policy attention on programmes directed at reducing stunting among children under age of five, improving girls’ school education and bridging the gender gap.
