Kelli Bryant, a 35-year-old Michigan woman, is heading to prison for child abandonment after having left her three children living in total squalor for years. Following a long and difficult trial filled with accusations of delay and other twists, she was sentenced to six to 30 years in prison on Tuesday following her no-contest plea to three counts of child abuse. On February 14, 2025, Oakland County Sheriff’s deputies discovered the children in a Pontiac condominium in February 2025 during a welfare check. Per Law & Crime, deputies found garbage stacked as high as four feet, mold throughout the unit, and human feces filling the bathtub and overflowing from the toilet. The children, who were 15, 13, and 12 at the time of the discovery, had been surviving like this since 2020 or 2021. Per reports, the son slept on a mattress on the floor, while his two sisters were forced to sleep on pizza boxes. FOX 2 reported that the children were largely left to fend for themselves while their mother pursued a child-free lifestyle. They spent their days playing video games and watching television with little to no guidance. This included a complete lack of guidance on how to care for themselves. Complete Isolation They reportedly lacked basic hygiene items, including toilet paper, and were unfamiliar with how to use or flush a toilet. The son told deputies that they survived on food that Bryant or an unidentified stranger would occasionally drop off on the front porch. The home wasn’t registered as a rental property, meaning it escaped the scrutiny of mandatory inspections. Furthermore, the children had reportedly been pulled out of school under the guise of transferring. Between the house and the fact that the children weren’t re-enrolled, they fell through the cracks in the system, allowing the abuse to continue undetected for years. The case is terrifyingly similar to the “house of horrors” discovered in Oviedo, Spain, last year. According to Law & Crime, during the sentencing hearing, Sixth Circuit Court Judge Mary Ellen Brennan told the defendant, “The toilet was not working and overflowing. Human feces in the bathtub, so [the children] couldn’t have access to that. If the Department of Corrections housed you the way you housed them, you’d file a lawsuit against them. And you’d win.” She continued, “During this time, your needs were met. Not perfectly, but you moved about in the world. You used toilets that flush. You had human contact. You had your physical needs met. She admitted that she collected over $29,000 in public assistance payments intended to support her children during the very years she had abandoned them. According to Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald, “The defendant appears to have effectively abandoned her children while collecting their public assistance. This crime is, first and foremost, a theft from Kelli Bryant’s children.” FOX 2 reported that the children are now in the custody of relatives. Testimony revealed that they are now making progress in a nurturing environment, though they continue to face challenges related to PTSD, intellectual disabilities, and learning disabilities. McDonald expressed hope for their future, saying, “I’m hopeful her victims will continue to have the space and resources to heal from this abhorrent trauma.” With her current sentence, Bryant will remain behind bars for at least six years. Per Law & Crime, by the time she is eligible for parole, all three of her children will be adults. When discussing the case, Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard noted, “Throughout my extensive career in this field, I have never encountered a scenario as dire and prolonged as this one, involving abandonment, neglect, and abuse of the highest order.”
