RIP: Ecotu AgapitusThe deputy commander of the Field Force Unit (FFU), Commissioner of Police (CP) Ecotu Agapitus, has died at Mulago National Referral Hospital.Ecotu, who was serving as deputy commander of the police formation responsible for public order management, riot control and tactical operations, died while serving under Assistant Inspector General of Police John Nuwagira.He was transferred to the FFU in the 2024 reshuffle by Inspector General of Police Abbas Byakagaba. His death deprives the Uganda Police Force of one of its experienced senior officers, whose career spanned administration, field operations, counter-terrorism and international peacekeeping.Before joining the FFU, Ecotu served at the police headquarters in the Directorate of Human Resource Administration, where he handled personnel and institutional management.He also served in the Counter-Terrorism Directorate, including the Oil and Gas Protection Division, which was established to secure critical national infrastructure.Ecotu also held senior command responsibilities in the Rwenzori region, where he was involved in sensitive operations following the 2016 clashes in Kasese, including the reception of Rwenzururu royal guards who surrendered to security forces.In June 2023, President Yoweri Museveni promoted Ecotu from Assistant Commissioner of Police to Commissioner of Police as part of a mass promotion involving 1,638 police officers.His experience also earned him consideration for United Nations police assignments under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), now known as the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS).In February 2022, Ecotu was at Aljazeera 2 Camp in Mogadishu during the handover of a new Ugandan Formed Police Unit contingent.During the mission, he was involved in training and mentoring members of the Somali Police Force, advising on police reforms and overseeing Ugandan individual police officers deployed under the African Union mission.Colleagues have described Ecotu as disciplined, consistent and dependable, with a clean record during his years in the force.Police spokesperson ACP Kituuma Rusoke, who was in Entebbe on Friday among government officials who received the remains of the late Omukama of Tooro, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, confirmed that the police will issue an official statement on Ecotu’s death.He said details regarding the cause of death and burial arrangements would be communicated in due course.The post Deputy police field commander Ecotu dies at Mulago appeared first on The Observer Media Ltd.
