European Parliament President Roberta Metsola has penned a message to Daphne Caruana Galizia following what she described as “difficult days and hours” for the journalist’s loved ones. Her message comes following the conclusion of Yorgen Fenech’s trial, which saw him found not guilty of complicity in Caruana Galizia’s murder and criminal association.Addressing the assassinated journalist directly, Metsola recalled the promise made following her murder on 16th October 2017. We will not give up and we will not give in.”Metsola said the reaction to recent developments should not turn into “helplessness or fatigue”, but instead “renewed determination” to pursue justice and ensure those responsible are held accountable. She also reflected on attempts over the past nine years to silence Caruana Galizia’s work and legacy, arguing that they had failed.“Nearly a decade after they stopped you writing, your pen is still mightier than all their swords combined,” Metsola concluded. Her message comes a day after jurors delivered their verdict in Yorgen Fenech’s trial, finding him not guilty of both charges by an 8-1 majority last night.•
