Matthew Caruana Galizia has issued a blistering reaction to Yorgen Fenech’s acquittal, describing the verdict as “obscene” and saying the country is in shock. His comments come a day after jurors found Fenech not guilty by an 8-1 majority on both charges he faced in connection with the assassination of Matthew’s mother, Daphne Caruana Galizia.“This verdict is obscene and the whole country is in shock,” Caruana Galizia wrote. He then directed particularly strong criticism towards the jurors, saying he hoped they would “realise what they have done”.“That they were handed the trigger phone and sent the SMS to blow up my mother all over again,” he wrote.Caruana Galizia went on to argue that the jury’s decision went against what he described as the evidence, logic and truth presented during the trial.“And that verdict can never be accepted no matter what,” he said.He concluded with perhaps his strongest condemnation of Wednesday’s outcome: “What happened in that room is not justice but pure evil.”Fenech walked free from court on Wednesday evening following the conclusion of the 55-day trial.•
