AMD at a 54-Year Channel Top — Is Another -90% Crash Coming?Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.BATS:AMDTradingShotAdvanced Micro Devices (AMD) has been trading within a Channel Up during its 54 years (since December 1972) of price action and in June it touched its Top and turned sideways since. ** Last time on this spot: - 91.21% crash ** This is a major warning for investors as last time this took place in September 1984, the market crashed by -91.21%. Full disclosure, we are not saying that AMD will absolutely experience such a crash but the pattern's aren't all that different both technically and fundamentally. ** Striking similarities of now and then: technically and fundamentally ** There is a striking symmetry between the two rallies (1974 - 1985 and 2015 - 2026) that have led to these Tops. Both 11 years of approximate duration, both gaining identical extraordinary returns of +37000%, both supported by the 1M MA50 (blue trend-line) - 1M MA100 (green trend-line) Zone for rebounds. This time, the 2M RSI is on a Bearish Divergence even. Fundamentally, the two rallies were driven by very different technological revolutions, but there is an interesting fundamental rhyme: in both eras AMD went from a relatively small/challenged semiconductor company into a beneficiary of a new computing platform that was rapidly becoming an industry standard. The 1974–1985 rally coincided with AMD's transformation from a young semiconductor manufacturer into a critical second-source supplier of x86 processors during the birth of the IBM PC era. The 2015–2026 rally followed another corporate transformation, beginning with AMD's near-crisis conditions in 2015 and accelerating through Zen, Ryzen, EPYC, 7nm market-share gains and ultimately the artificial-intelligence infrastructure boom. In both cases, AMD became attached to a technological platform experiencing explosive adoption: PCs in the early 1980s and AI/data-center computing today. The major difference is that modern AMD controls much more of its own technology and operates across a considerably broader portfolio, meaning an identical technical setup does not necessarily imply an identical fundamental outcome. ** Dotcom, Subprime and other 'minor' crashes ** So back to the technicals. Apart from the post 1985 -91.21% crash, AMD historically had another two similar crashes: -93.56% during the 2000 - 2002 Dot-com crash and -96.27% during 2006 - 2008, just before the U.S. Subprime Crisis. Besides those major crash events, AMD has historically corrected between -66.06% and -78.06% seven times. The two most recent have been in 2022 and 2024/25 (both around -67%), the latter of which tested the 1M MA100 before rebounding into the recent rally. ** So what now? $200, $53 or new paradigm? ** As a result, even if no major catalyst presents itself for a -91% correction, AMD could still deliver a -67% decline given its recent 4-year price action, taking into account that it also hit the top of this 54-year Channel Up. If such a correction is materialized, we may see it testing its 1M MA100 again around $200. If however a major catalyst does happen (which is by any means not a high probability, Dotcom/ Subprime catalysts aren't just around the corner very often) and a -91.21% crash takes place, AMD will find itself around $53.00 back to the lows of its 2022 correction.
