In 1834, an American blacksmith along with his wife built the first practical DC electric motor, changing how electrical energy could be converted into mechanical motion. Thomas Davenport used a battery, electromagnets, an armature and a commutator to produce continuous rotation. His work later supported developments in electric transportation, industrial machines, printing and electrical generation.
