The mother of an autistic child has accused Starbucks staff of refusing her service because her son was crying. The video, which appears to have been recorded in the coffee shop, shows two members of staff standing behind the counter as the mother berates them, asking for a reason as to why they won’t serve her while her child can be heard crying in the background. The clip, originally posted to TikTok by Imaan Up, the mother of the child, has sparked outrage online. Imaan claims she posted it to raise awareness for the struggles autistic people and their families deal with in the real world. In the text in the video, she also claims that staff threatened to call 911 on her. She claims it was all because her autistic son was crying in the shop. Pointing to the male Starbucks server, Imaan says, “This guy, he’s told me, he’s refused serving me.” She then asks the two employees for a reason, and the female server tells her, “Your kid is in here crying.” Imaan says her child wants a lollipop, but the female server says, “Common decency is to leave your kid out there, get the lollipop, bring it to your kid.” @imaan.up Shame on you @Starbucks STARBUCKS THREATENED TO CALL 911 BECAUSE MY AUTISTIC SON WAS CRYING. The male server claims it’s a “third-party policy” before he is seen walking off camera. According to fashiontimes.co.uk, Starbucks rules regarding disruption do state that the shop spaces are intended for everyone and that customers can be asked to leave if they do not adhere to the code. Starbucks allegedly paused service and threatened to call 911 In the description, Imaan claimed that the stand-off between her and staff started after staff “made an error with my order.” She said that while they were waiting, her son became distressed and she tried purchasing a treat to calm him down but was refused service. She then claimed that when other customers tried to help, a supervisor stepped in and “stopped serving everyone” until Imaan and her child left. They also allegedly threatened to call the cops. Imaan claims that they were “not aggressive or threatening” and that “autism is not a crime,” but that families like hers needed “understanding, not humiliation and threats.” What was shown in Imaan’s video was enough for most viewers to decide to side with her. They called out both Starbucks and the individual staff members for mishandling the situation. “Saying she should left him outside and come in for the cake pop first !!! Like what??? Is illegal to leave your child alone,” wrote one commenter. Some were willing to boycott Starbucks over the whole situation, asking where the shop was so they could avoid it. Others claimed this was a violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act and told Imaan, “You can absolutely sue.”
