Eberhard Vogel has died. The former world-class left winger for FC Karl-Marx-Stadt and FC Carl Zeiss Jena died on Tuesday at the age of 83 following a long illness. The news was announced by his family. During his playing career, GDR international Vogel completely redefined the role of the left winger. He made 440 appearances in the GDR Oberliga – making him the club’s all-time record holder. His tally of 188 league goals places him second behind Joachim Streich (229 goals). His career statistics are highlighted by 74 appearances for the GDR national team, scoring 25 goals, and 24 matches for the Olympic squad, scoring ten goals. The GDR league title with Karl-Marx-Stadt in 1967 and the three FDGB Cup victories with Jena (1972, 1974, 1980) are surpassed by the two Olympic bronze medals in 1964 and 1972, as well as the 1981 European Cup Winners’ Cup final with Jena against Dynamo Tbilisi (1–2). He was also part of the GDR squad for the 1974 World Cup. What remains are the memories of many fine goals and countless runs down the wing, which also earned him respect and recognition abroad. So much so that even the legendary Pelé wanted to bring Vogel to his FC Santos as a strike partner. That was back in the 1970s. Back then, an offer from the Pelé club in Jena – which, by the standards of the time, was considered scandalous – arrived from Brazil. The terms of the deal: two million Deutschmarks – 1.5 million for Carl Zeiss, half a million for Vogel as a signing bonus. “Well, I would certainly have liked to have had the money,” Vogel once said: “But I was very attached to my home; I didn’t want to leave my parents and friends. And by the way: my father would have strangled me if I’d run off. But a move was never really on the cards.” Vogel’s coaching career, by contrast, was only marked by significant success at youth level. From 1983 to 1990, he worked for the GDR Football Association. In 1986, he led the junior squad featuring Matthias Sammer to European Championship glory, and the following year the U20s finished third at the World Cup. Finally, in 1989, the U16s won silver at the European Championships. Vogel witnessed the end of GDR football as assistant manager of the last national team, working alongside Eduard Geyer. After German reunification, he had a series of short-term stints as a club manager in Jena, at Hannover 96, at 1.
