Walt Disney World transportation has become a surprisingly big part of the conversation lately.Disney has spent the past several months adjusting when guests can use certain transportation options, who can access them, and where those services can take visitors. Some of those updates have affected resort hopping, while others have come alongside ongoing construction and refurbishment projects around the property.Now, Magic Kingdom visitors have another transportation headache coming their way.Disney has confirmed that one of the park’s most familiar ways to travel will temporarily disappear later this month. The closure won’t last forever, but the timing could create some headaches for guests visiting during one of Magic Kingdom’s busiest seasonal stretches.Before getting to that closure, though, it’s worth looking at how much Disney transportation has already changed.Getting Around Disney World Isn’t Quite as Simple AnymoreDisney transportation has traditionally made it fairly easy for guests to move between theme parks, hotels, and Disney Springs without a car.Recently, however, Disney has tightened some of that flexibility.One of the biggest examples involves transportation from Disney Springs to Disney resort hotels. That service is now limited to Disney Resort hotel guests and visitors with valid dining or experience reservations.Guests using buses or water transportation from Disney Springs to resort hotels may be asked to show a valid room key, dining reservation, or experience reservation.The policy imposes new limits on the use of Disney Springs transportation for casual resort hopping, particularly for visitors without reservations or a resort stay.Transportation adjustments haven’t stopped there, either.Credit: DisneySeveral Transportation Options Have Faced DowntimeDisney World has also dealt with several transportation refurbishments and service interruptions in recent months.In August, the FriendShip Boat dock serving Disney’s Yacht Club Resort and Disney’s Beach Club Resort temporarily closed for maintenance, disrupting boat access for guests staying in that resort area.Disney also suspended boat service along the Sassagoula River Cruise route from July 20 through late August for refurbishment, leaving guests at resorts along the route to rely on other transportation to reach Disney Springs.Those disruptions show how transportation operations can affect how guests get around the massive resort.Even within Magic Kingdom, transportation can serve as both an attraction and a practical way to travel.That’s especially noticeable as construction transforms Frontierland for Piston Peak National Park. One longtime transportation option has already been operating differently as a result of that work.And later this month, guests won’t be able to use it at all.Credit: DisneyMagic Kingdom Has Already Lost Part of This RouteThe Walt Disney World Railroad has continued operating at Magic Kingdom, but its normal route has already been affected by construction.Frontierland Station remains unavailable, meaning guests can’t currently use the railroad exactly as they could before work began in the area.Normally, the railroad provides transportation around Magic Kingdom while also functioning as an attraction in its own right. Guests can board, relax, and enjoy a slower trip around the park.That makes it particularly useful during long Magic Kingdom days.Soon, however, even that modified experience will temporarily disappear.The entire Walt Disney World Railroad is scheduled to close beginning September 28 for refurbishment.Thankfully, Disney isn’t planning an especially long shutdown. The railroad is currently scheduled to reopen on October 30, giving guests a confirmed return date rather than leaving the closure open-ended.Still, that means visitors arriving during much of October will find the trains unavailable.And October isn’t exactly a quiet time at Magic Kingdom.Credit: DisneyThe Timing Could Make This Closure Hurt MoreA Walt Disney World Railroad closure would be noticeable at any time, but late September and October aren’t ideal.Halloween season is already underway at Magic Kingdom, with Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party taking place on select nights and fall visitors filling the park during regular hours.That means Magic Kingdom will have one fewer attraction available during much of the Halloween season. Regular daytime visitors miss out on the experience, while Halloween party guests arriving early won’t have the opportunity to ride before the event begins.The railroad also gives guests a valuable chance to sit down during a long park day. Instead of walking between areas, visitors can relax while still experiencing an attraction.Frontierland Station’s closure had already reduced the railroad’s usefulness as a means of getting around. Now the entire attraction will temporarily disappear.Whether visiting for Halloween or simply taking a fall Disney World vacation, guests will have one less attraction to enjoy until the trains return.Credit: DisneyMagic Kingdom Visitors Will Need Another PlanThe good news is that Disney has already placed an end date on this refurbishment.If everything remains on schedule, the Walt Disney World Railroad will reopen on October 30, just before Halloween itself and ahead of the transition toward the holiday season.Until then, guests visiting from September 28 through October 29 should prepare for more walking around Magic Kingdom.That’s hardly disastrous, but it adds another inconvenience during a time when Disney World’s transportation options and policies are already changing.The railroad might not be the fastest way around Magic Kingdom, but that’s never really been the point.It gives guests transportation, an attraction, and a much-needed break all at once.
