Candles have lit up the memorial to assassinated journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia in Valletta as Malta awaits a historic verdict in the trial of Yorgen Fenech.The memorial, situated opposite Malta’s law courts, is illuminated by candles as the nine-person jury retired to deliberate this morning.Fenech stands accused of complicity in the 2017 assassination of Caruana Galizia and of conspiring to murder her. He has consistently denied the charges.The jury began deliberations shortly after 11am after Judge Edwina Grima concluded her final address following a trial that began on 1st July.A verdict requires the support of at least six of the nine jurors.If found guilty of complicity in Caruana Galizia’s murder, Fenech could face life imprisonment.As the country waits for the jury’s decision, the candles at Caruana Galizia’s memorial offer a poignant sight just metres away from the courtroom where one of Malta’s most closely followed trials is reaching its conclusion.•
