Prime Minister Robert Abela has confirmed that Parliament will convene on Friday tomorrow for a debate following Yorgen Fenech’s acquittal in the Daphne Caruana Galizia murder trial.The confirmation came as Abela addressed journalists for the first time since Wednesday’s 8-1 not guilty verdict on both charges.The debate follows Opposition leader Alex Borg’s formal request to Speaker Anġlu Farrugia to urgently reconvene Parliament in the wake of the verdict.Abela confirmed he will attend, but stressed that “responsibility must prevail” during the discussion, particularly with investigations surrounding the assassination still ongoing.The Prime Minister pointed towards Judge Edwina Grima’s decision to forward testimony heard during Fenech’s trial to the Police Commissioner for examination, while also ordering evidence to be added to two ongoing inquiries.Abela said this means politicians must exercise prudence to avoid prejudicing any investigations.Asked for his own reaction to the jury’s decision, Abela declined to comment, saying it was not his place to comment on the jurors’ verdict.Meanwhile, prosecutors have 15 days to decide whether to lodge an appeal and are currently evaluating the judgment.•
