The Institute of Maltese Journalists (IGM) has expressed its disappointment following Yorgen Fenech’s acquittal, while stressing that the jury’s verdict must be fully respected.After a 55-day trial before Madam Justice Edwina Grima, jurors found Fenech not guilty of complicity in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia and criminal association to commit the murder.“This verdict must be fully respected as the outcome of the judicial process. Nonetheless, this does not mean the IGM is not disappointed with the outcome,” the institute said.The IGM stressed that, for the organisation, the verdict does not close the case surrounding Caruana Galizia’s assassination.“Her murder remains unresolved in the fullest sense, and today’s outcome is not the accountability many of us had hoped for.”The institute said it continues to expect “full justice, nothing less”, arguing that the person or people who commissioned Caruana Galizia’s murder remain free.“Someone, somewhere, placed a hit out on Daphne, and that person or persons remain disappointingly free,” it said.The IGM is now calling on police to pursue all leads that emerged throughout the trial, including those pointing towards former senior political figures.“We still expect justice, full justice, nothing less, and we await what comes next in this investigation,” the institute said.•
