The monthly vigil held in memory of Daphne Caruana Galizia is set to become a solidarity protest this month following Yorgen Fenech’s acquittal.For 107 months, Repubblika and Occupy Justice have organised vigils at the Great Siege monument in Valletta, calling for truth, justice and accountability following Caruana Galizia’s assassination.But on Wednesday 16th September at 7pm, organisers say the gathering will take a different form.“The time for vigils is now over. Now we protest in solidarity,” Repubblika announced, arguing that Fenech’s acquittal “cannot be the end of Malta’s reckoning”.The NGO said it was “shocked and deeply disappointed” by the verdict, while stressing that it respects the judicial process.It argued that the evidence heard during the trial, the findings of the Public Inquiry and questions surrounding institutional failures and impunity remain relevant despite the acquittal.Repubblika is now calling on people to gather not merely to another vigil, but to protest in solidarity, particularly with Caruana Galizia’s family, journalists, activists and citizens.The regular vigils had been suspended during the trial in July and August after organisers were advised they could be perceived as an attempt to influence the jury.•
