In this continuing series, TDN's Senior Racing Editor Steve Sherack catches up with the connections of promising maidens to keep on your radar.Psalm Beauty (f, 2, Jackie's Warrior–Platinum Paynter, by Paynter) came rolling down the center of the course in the stretch to round out a one-two finish for her freshman sire in her unveiling on Travers Day at the Spa.Overlooked at odds of 9-1, the Courtlandt Farms colorbearer broke well, but began to drop back quickly and only had one beaten in eighth through an opening quarter in :22.31. Under a ride by Jose Ortiz heading into the far turn, she began to launch approaching the quarter pole and was guided out widest of all in about the seven or eight path at the top of the stretch.Second-time starter Virabhadrasana (Jackie's Warrior) opened up a two-length advantage and had the race decided at the stretch call. Psalm Beauty, meanwhile, continued on impressively down the lane and finished up in a field-best :12.88, nosing out a pair of rivals for runner-up honors. The final time for six furlongs over the fast going was 1:11.52.Psalm Beauty, trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, earned a 65 Beyer Speed Figure.“We were super encouraged by her effort,” Courtlandt Farm Manager Ernie Retamoza said. “She took the overland route coming home and lost a ton of ground. What I like is she ran all the way to the wire. She never really backed up as difficult as it was for her to overcome that wide trip. I understand it, she had the momentum and we had to keep it going. Not taking anything away from the rider at all. He did the right thing–keep the momentum and let her run. I thought we were kinda lucky to be second. We could've been fourth. We were all in the same spot (for second), those three fillies.”Psalm Beauty | Sarah AndrewPsalm Beauty brought $625,000 from Donald Adam's operation as a yearling out of the Stoneriggs Farm consignment on day four (Book 2) of last year's Keeneland September sale. Hailing from the first crop of the 2021 champion male sprinter–now responsible for nine winners–she was produced by Platinum Paynter, who finished third in a pair of graded stakes on grass. This is also the female family of Canadian Horse of the Year A Bit O'Gold. Psalm Beauty was bred in Kentucky by Elliot Slack.“We loved the filly all along,” Retamoza said. “Obviously loved her at the sale, i.e. the purchase price. Got her home, she was a class act every step of the way. Never missed a day of training. I remember in February we had her here (at the farm) and I was thinking, 'Man, I can ship her to the track tomorrow and say this is a 3-year-old filly coming in and they'd believe it.' Know what I mean? She was just a big strong, mentally strong filly. Very forward and just pure class.”Psalm Beauty could potentially make her next start in Kentucky this fall at either Churchill Downs or Keeneland, per Retamoza.“We're really high on the filly,” Retamoza said. “I think going further, stretch out a little bit, those fractions will set up a little different for her and she'll probably be part of that pace, just sitting.”Retamoza added, “We're real excited about her. She ran really well.” Since launching 'Second Chances' in 2017, 78 maidens have been featured in these pages (through 2025), producing 26% graded stakes winners, 36% stakes winners and 49% stakes horses. The series has introduced 10 future winners at the top level, led by 2025 Horse of the Year and dual Classic winner Sovereignty (Into Mischief), 2023 Horse of the Year Cody's Wish (Curlin) and fellow two-time Breeders' Cup winner Golden Pal (Uncle Mo).VIRABHADRASANA, by champion JACKIE'S WARRIOR, breaks her maiden at 10-1 in the sixth race under @RSantana_Jr for @kinnonlarose. pic.twitter.com/C57rDVMjJf— NYRA () (@TheNYRA) August 29, 2026The post Second Chances: Psalm Beauty Gets Up for Second After ‘Overland Route’ on Debut on Travers Day appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
