Dr. Henry David Abraham, a professor of psychiatry emeritus at Tufts University School of Medicine and a shared recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize, recently joined SiriusXM radio’s Dean Obeidallah show to discuss President Donald Trump’s cognitive health. Abraham is part of a prominent group of 36 physicians who previously issued a formal statement calling for the removal of Trump from office via the 25th Amendment, citing concerns that he is mentally unfit. When asked by Obeidallah if anything had changed since the group submitted their initial conclusion to the congressional record, Abraham was direct, claiming. “Yeah, if anything it’s worse.” He continued, “It’s subtle in terms of his mental status because a lot of it is more of the same. But when you get confirmatory evidence that points in the same direction again and again, after a while you sort of know what you’re dealing with and you kind of know what needs to be done.” Abraham used a stark analogy to lay out his argument, stating, “I mean, if an airline pilot had half of the symptoms that the president of the United States has, we would not let him on an airplane. We certainly wouldn’t want to fly with him,” he noted. “We wouldn’t want a neurosurgeon to walk into the operating room and operate on, you know, it doesn’t make sense. And yet, we have a system which enfolds the president’s health in a shroud of secrecy.” The reason for the concern Abraham noted that the secrecy might be fine under normal circumstances. However, he also worried, “When a person has sole access to the nuclear armamentaria, it’s crazy, and this is what we’re doing. I think we’re in even more danger of Donald Trump using a nuclear weapon in a fit of pique or rage or confusion or poor impulse control than ever before. So yes, he’s more dangerous.” Per The Daily Beast, the group of 36 experts that Dr Abraham is said to be part of, including neurologists and psychiatrists, voiced similar alarms. In a letter that is now part of the congressional record, they highlighted what they described as a “rapidly worsening, reality-untethered, increasingly dangerous decline.” The Daily Beast reported that the issues named were “Marked deterioration in cognitive functioning, evidenced by disorganized and tangential speech, rambling digressions, factual confusions, unexplained sudden changes of course in strategic matters, both national and international, episodes of apparent somnolence during critical public proceedings.” They also pointed to Trump’s alleged “grandiose and delusional beliefs.” As examples, they pointed to imagery of himself as the Pope, a combat pilot, and even Jesus on Truth Social. They also reportedly noted signs of impaired judgment, impulse control, and reckless threats of violence against civilians. Wow: Trump says he just finished yet another physical at Walter Reed and has requested another cognitive exam as rumors and evidence continue to pile up about his declining health and mental state. pic.twitter.com/Dd1Un8tyD9— MeidasTouch (@MeidasTouch) July 11, 2026 Abraham then pointed Obeidallah to a memorandum allegedly received by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Trump that really concerned him. This memorandum, per NBC News, provided nuclear options for regional conflict against enemies like China and Russia. He worried about whether the President had a “true concept” of the impacts of nuclear weapons, and of the push to use AI with the weapons. Abraham also expressed deep skepticism regarding Trump’s boasts about his performance on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, a screening tool for dementia. The psychiatrist told Obeidallah, “The probability of getting a perfect score if you’re a normal person with a mocha is, you know, back of the envelope calculation 10 percent,” he said. “The probability of getting it four times in a row is 1 in 10,000. So come on, guys, one in 10,000. That’s not the way you place the bet.” White House spokespeople, however, have consistently pushed back against inquiries into his fitness and cognitive function. The Washington Post reported that after Trump’s last physical, the administration asserted that Trump was in “excellent health.” These responses have reportedly also been getting aggressive, with the White House creating a “Wall of Shame” to criticize questions. Despite this, independent physicians and even previous presidential doctors have continued to raise questions about visible symptoms, such as Trump’s swollen legs and bruised hands. The Washington Post also cited a poll indicating that public confidence in the President’s mental sharpness and physical health has declined over the past year from 47% to 40%. Looking ahead, Abraham told Obeidallah that if Democrats gain control of the House, they need to move beyond mere political posturing. “They should have hearings,” he stated. “They should have letters, and they should have subpoenas, and they should have investigations, and probably they should have, uh, they should try to invoke the 25th Amendment or impeach the president.”
