So I talked to a couple South African refugees that landed in the hotel that I stay at, and this whole thread chain is such a shit take- I'm sorry but I have to call it out because it's no different than how racist white people think about hispanic immigrants. None of them expected housing, or a job. It's like every other refugee program where they assist with finding housing after they stay in a hotel for up to 90 days, and then they have a job programs like a Goodwill does- the refugee pays for the housing outside of the hotel stay. The one that I talk to the most about the political situation there was willing to work at a Walmart or gas station as long as it was a job. He was previously in the trades in South Africa as an electrician. It's not just about the race politics there, though that is a lot of it. South Africa is generally considered unsafe for everybody, it's a high crime rate with a very very high unemployment, and you've never lived somewhere I'm assuming that has something called load shedding. Most of them don't have consistent power, I.e. the power shuts off in a rotating schedule in certain areas. As far as the race politics goes, it's not white replacement, it's an immediate reaction to apartheid. There are three main political parties in South Africa, the one that's currently in power has passed employment laws that are very discriminatory towards white people. I'm not saying that to support the right wing theory, I'm saying Google it it's a real thing. The gentleman that was discussing it with was run out of his own building, with threats to burn it down. He also was assaulted in the street with his friend, who had severe brain damage afterwards over the race politics there. One of those political parties that is not in power is run by the equivalent of a black Donald Trump, like reverse the racism here- it's fucking bonkers. He's well known for being super controversial and is banned from certian countries- they have a famous song in South Africa that this specific party likes to sing as a political chant- "kill the boer," which is referring to murdering white Dutch farmers. They also talk about that for every black life taken, four must be paid from white people. I had the same view as you until I personally talk to a few of them and spent the day going down a rabbit hole all about it. If you live in a western country you can just walk around to wherever you want, in South Africa everything is partitioned off and it's like a war zone. One of them asked me if it was okay just to go walk around the open college campus next to us because they wanted to send pictures to their families- like they didn't understand they could just walk around in public places in general without any kind of issue. Each one of meant has been very kind and humble, but I will say that they do have a positive view of Donald Trump because of this immigration program until they get here and see our politics from the inside, every single one of them is flipped since they've gotten here and realized what a shit show it is politically- Americans really take the freedom they have for granted when it comes to just general access to utilities, public spaces, and the availability of resources like food and shelter. That's just my two cents as an American that is actually interacted with multiple SA refugees.
