Stand-up comedy duo Madrat and Chiko have called upon the government, to consider rewarding veteran creatives with tokens of appreciation or gratuity for their contribution to Uganda’s entertainment industry. The comedians voiced their concerns during the burial ceremony of the late Ugandan creative and playwright Alex Mukulu, who was laid to rest at his ancestral home.Speaking to the press, Madrat and Chiko argued that the government should appreciate creatives while they are still alive and able to benefit from such support, rather than only honouring them with official or decent send-offs after their death.According to the duo, Alex Mukulu would have deserved to receive government recognition and financial support during his lifetime given the significant role he played in shaping Uganda’s creative industry.“The state should appreciate us as creatives at least. Alex Mukulu would have passed on when the government had given him a token of appreciation or gratuity to enjoy life. So it doesn’t make any sense even when he is accorded a decent, honorable, and official send-off.”They further called on the government to recognise and reward other veteran creatives who are still alive, citing legendary figures such as Andrew Benon Kibuuka, Charles James Ssenkubuge and John Segawa, among others.Senkubuge launches fundraiser for John Segawa’s wedding amid mourning for Alex Mukulu“The government has to appreciate the legendary artists and creatives who helped shape this industry, like Andrew Benon Kibuuka, Charles James Ssenkubuge, and John Segawa, among others,” the duo added.Madrat and Chiko believe that supporting veteran creatives during their lifetime would be a more meaningful way of recognising their contribution to the entertainment industry than waiting until their passing to honour them."Mutujjukire nga tetunnafa mutuwe akasiimo" Madrat ne Chiko bakubidde gav't omulanga#DailySoup | https://t.co/t6zAMdFO3R pic.twitter.com/3WNM5lDj2Z— SPARK TV (@sparktvuganda) August 20, 2026The post Madrat and Chiko want government to provide gratuity to veteran creatives during their lifetimes appeared first on MBU.
