Originally, ABC’s The View was never supposed to be as serious as it’s gotten in recent years. Over time, though, the daytime series has comprised a panel of mostly liberals with one to two conservatives peppered in for a counterpoint. Politics are discussed frequently, and many conservatives who have been on the show have expressed struggling there, with Meghan McCain famously calling it a “toxic work environment.” The show rarely even has on conservative guests, and a study went around in 2025 that painted a bleak picture for right-wing advocates, noting the daytime series had only hosted two that entire year: Cheryl Hines (who was deeply upset about the experience) and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (who also got into a contentious conversation about rape during her episode). Bill O’Reilly and Ben Shapiro were recently discussing this bullet point on “We’ll Do It Live” when the pundit and writer admitted, at least in his case, it’s not a case of avoiding The View but rather the View avoiding him. When asked if he thought The View would book him, Shapiro said: Not in a million years. I’ve been trying to get on The View for years, because that is a dream booking for me. There’s nothing I would love better than to have a conversation with Joy Behar and Whoopi Goldberg, and Sunny Hostin.Admitting that he’s maybe been “hate-watching” the ABC daytime series a bit, he did say it has been a long, drawn-out journey to try and land a “slot” on the popular show. So, it sounds like he’s speaking with experience when he says he doesn’t think the ladies at ABC would ever let him on the air. So I would definitely appreciate a booking slot, but that has never been in the offing, despite 10 years of trying to get myself booked. Now, to note, Bill O’Reilly has been on The View, but he did so many years ago before the daytime series seemingly grew into the series it is today. He said it was his relationship with Barbara Walters that led to his invite, and he appeared in nine episodes of the show between 2006 and 2016. Walters herself retired in 2014, with O’Reilly noting he hadn’t been invited back since she died in 2022, but not seeming too interested in that changing, either. Coincidentally, 2016 was the first year President Donald Trump was in office. A year later, in 2017, O’Reilly himself was ousted from Fox News after facing several lawsuits. He’s not a regular on TV anymore, but he’s since pivoted to podcasts, the radio and myriad other gigs. It was around that time that Ben Shapiro began making a name for himself in places like Breitbart News and The Daily Wire.As for The View, it’s been a big topic of discussion in 2026 thanks to the FCC and ABC’s back-and-forth over whether or not the equal time rule should apply. As noted prior, The View doesn’t always have on political guests, but when it does, liberal guests are seemingly preferred. We’ll have to wait to see how that issue shapes out, but if The View does end up adding more political guests across the spectrum, I guess we can take this as Ben Shapiro leaving his calling card.
