Prime Minister Robert Abela has reaffirmed Malta’s support for a two-state solution after joining international leaders in opposing Israel’s controversial E1 settlement plan in the West Bank.“Malta stands for peace, stability & a two-state solution,” Abela said, explaining that Malta had supported the Joint Leaders’ Statement against the proposed settlement expansion.The statement brings together Malta, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Canada, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Sweden, Belgium, Spain, Austria, Greece, Cyprus, Finland, Iceland, Lithuania and Denmark, alongside the European Commission.International leaders warned that the E1 project would undermine the prospects of a two-state solution by dividing the West Bank and damaging the territorial continuity of Palestinian territories.The joint statement also reiterated the signatories’ position that Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal under international law and warned businesses against bidding for construction tenders connected to the project.Abela said Malta’s position was based on “principle, dialogue and a firm commitment to a lasting peace”.The intervention comes as Malta continues to position itself internationally in support of a negotiated two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.Do you agree with Robert Abela’s position on the E1 settlement plan?•
