Fans have speculated a lot about the exact content of Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Endgame re-release. Encore is set to include about four minutes of bonus footage that didn’t exist in the 2019 version of the superhero juggernaut, bringing the runtime to 185 minutes, up from the original 181 minutes, but although we now have an updated runtime that gives fans a concrete four-minute difference, it still doesn’t say where those four minutes are in the movie.Realistically, four minutes could be one scene. It could also be four minutes’ worth of footage peppered into the Endgame story. Going back to the theater to see Endgame won’t be free; it’s going to cost people money, and as some fans consequently dismiss the re-release as a simple cash grab ahead of Doomsday, Marvel is only giving others just enough information to raise expectations.Russo’s description of the new material as a “critical companion story” that creates a bridge from Endgame to Doomsday makes the footage sound narratively significant, but if Marvel said, “We’re bringing Endgame back to theaters with a new four-minute Doomsday-related post-credits scene,” fans would know exactly what they’re buying. As it stands, they don’t, so Avengers Endgame: Encore has become the cinematic equivalent of a pricey blind bag: tantalizing to some, exasperating to others. If Encore were simply a celebratory theatrical return, that ambiguity wouldn’t matter much, but Marvel is positioning it as part of the run-up to Avengers: Doomsday. The whole point is apparently to establish some connective tissue between the two films. It might sound like a bit of a grumble, but let’s face it: Endgame is already available to watch at home. Anyone considering spending money to see it again on the big screen will naturally want to know what they’re getting that they can’t get by watching the original on Disney+ and either waiting for Doomsday or scrolling through the inevitable description that leaks online soon after the re-release.
