Tottenham were well beaten 3-0 in their opening Premier League game against Brentford, leaving them bottom in the Premier League table.Let us take a look at five things we learned from the match:Tottenham’s first-half effort was simply not good enoughThe Premier League is finally back, but it did not take long before Tottenham Hotspur ruined the weekend of the Spurs faithful.Unbeaten in pre-season, with £237 million spent on new additions, things looked to be heading in the right direction until Spurs took to the pitch this evening. It did not even take long before Tottenham capitulated, with the Lilywhites putting in one of their worst opening-day performances in recent times.Spurs barely had a kick in the first half, with Brentford managing a fast start, pressing Tottenham high and making it difficult for De Zerbi’s men to get into any sort of rhythm. While there could be the excuse of rustiness or this being the first time most of these players have played together, the first half was simply not acceptable as it was just too low effort.Spurs have better options, but some missed their chanceLooking at the starting XI put out by De Zerbi, it is clear it is far from the Lilywhites’ strongest team, with several key players missing. The likes of Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro, Mateus Fernandes and Destiny Udogie did not start this evening, and one would expect them to feature in the Lilywhites’ strongest XI.In fact, you could argue that only three of the XI today will make Spurs’ strongest line-up in a month or so (Van Hecke, Kinsky, and Tonali). Many fans expect the eventual XI to be closer to Kinsky; Porro, Van Hecke, Van de Ven, Udogie; Tonali, Fernandes, Maddison; Kudus, Marmoush, Savinho.Spurs are also expected to bolster their attack before the summer transfer window slams shut, with Roberto De Zerbi himself confirming this. The Savinho deal has been completed and, had he joined in time, he would have featured from the right. Tottenham are also expected to push for another winger and a striker before the window slams shut, and the expectation is that these signings will be ready to get into the first team. While that offers a bit of hope for fans, the squad players who featured today and failed to make an impression have surely wasted their chance to impress.Photo by Harvey Murphy/News Images/NurPhoto via Getty ImagesMateus Fernandes shines off the bench for TottenhamHowever, it was not all doom and gloom in terms of individual performances, with Mateus Fernandes standing out tonight. The Portuguese started from the bench, but following his introduction, he created two chances from the number ten position. Had Mikey Moore had his shooting boots on, the £85 million signing would have managed two assists on his Premier League debut. The bar was low for Tottenham’s midfield after the first-half, but Fernandes came on moved the ball faster and more progressively through the lines. Spurs fans will be excited to see him get his first start next week as he looks to build a relationship with Tonali.Mikey Moore’s next loan will do his finishing the world of goodOf course, Spurs struggled at the back for most of the game and barely created anything in the first half. However, in the second 45, the Lilywhites were able to create a few big chances, with all of them falling to Moore. The first opportunity was created by Fernandes, who found the teenager free inside the box, but Moore fired straight at the goalkeeper.Robertson then created yet another one, with his trademark first-time cross finding Moore at the back post, but the teenager’s strike lacked power. He did have another chance from inside the box, but it was straight at Kelleher. Ideally, the young winger would not have been a part of the Spurs squad as he is nearing a move to FC Köln.However, with Tottenham short of attacking options, Moore’s move has been stalled. The teenager certainly is no stranger to scoring goals, having bagged a brace last weekend in the game against Hoffenheim. But Moore lacks consistency in front of goal, and that is a quality he will need to work on while away with FC Koln.Archie Gray makes Tottenham captaincy historyTonight marked a big milestone for Archie Gray, who was named captain by Roberto De Zerbi for Tottenham’s clash against Brentford. The 20-year-old was confirmed as part of Spurs’ leadership group on Friday by the Spurs boss, who has the likes of Micky van de Ven, Pedro Porro, Ben Davies and James Maddison ahead of him in the captain hierarchy. However, with neither of these players featuring from the off, Gray took on the armband and, in the process, broke the record for the youngest-ever captain at Spurs after having captained the side at 20 years and 163 days. That toppled all-time great Steve Perryman’s previous record of 20 years and 260 days.READ MORE: Tottenham player ratings vs Brentford as 7/10 star leaves the only positive markThe post Five things we learned as Tottenham suffer 3-0 opening day defeat to Brentford appeared first on Spurs Web.
