Affairs of honor–ones that involve a different kind of pacing and seconds–will once again take center stage at the all-grass venue known as Kentucky Downs.Literally the former site where various levels of 'code duello' unfolded some two centuries back–hence the track's early name 'Dueling Grounds'–the European-style course on the Tennessee line has evolved over the years into one of the 'Greatest Shows On Turf.'Owned by Ron Winchell and Marc Falcone, the unique horse racing product on Saturday, Aug. 29, will commence the first of seven days of racing as top horses, owners, trainers, jockeys, horseplayers and fans descend on the border burg to spectate and speculate from the chalets to the halls of Mint Gaming.If there is anyone up to the challenge of describing the pear-shaped action over all that undulating terrain then it has to be dueling expert announcer Michael Wrona.Ted Nicholson, the vice president of racing at Kentucky Downs, told TDN that he and his team began prepping the minute the final race was in the books last year. He said that improving the Kentucky Downs experience is the goal.“We're super excited about this meet,” Nicholson said. “Based on the reaction from all the horsemen from all over the country and all over the world these last couple years, we've just continued to attract more and more of an international following. When they find out about our purse structure, then it really gives us a chance to up our game even more.”One of the biggest pieces of news out of Kentucky Downs is that cards are planned for Sept. 5-7, which means that an all-new three straight days of racing are on tap for the Labor Day weekend. The 2026 meet will feature a total of 20 stakes races worth $25.75-million in total purses. Out of those, 12 stakes–valued collectively at $18-million–will be drawn for the holiday bonanza.The heart of the Kentucky Downs slate can be found on Saturday, Sept. 5. Leading the way is the $3-million GII Nashville Derby Invitational, which is the second richest 3-year-old stakes race in America behind only the GI Kentucky Derby.Also featured are four other graded stakes worth at least $1.5-million each, including two Breeders' Cup “Win and You're In” qualifiers–the $2-million GII Kentucky Turf Cup Invitational (for the GI Longines Breeders' Cup Turf) and the $1.75-million GII Kentucky Downs Turf Sprint (for the GI Prevagen Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint).The $1.5-million GII Music City and the $1.5-million GII Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf round out the day's schedule, which airs live on NBC starting at 3:00 p.m ET.Top jockey Jose Ortiz will pack his Saratoga bags and head to Kentucky Downs next week | Sarah Andrew“I've been to several of the European courses and they all test a horse's stamina in different ways,” said Nicholson. “When you scoot around the turn at Kentucky Downs and find yourself at the top of the stretch, you still have three-eighths of a mile to run, but it's a slight climb. It's not dramatic. Still, if the horse isn't fit enough, then you're not going to make it. No coasting in that final sixteenth.”Shipping in with staying power are a bevy of turf stars which will include ultra-consistent Kentucky Downs afficionado Ag Bullet (Twirling Candy), GI Longines Breeders' Cup longshot hero Ethical Diamond (Ire) (Awtaad {Ire}), North American superstar Burnham Square (Liam's Map), recent Ellis Park stakes winner Fancy Sailor (Justify), MGSW Brilliant Berti (Noble Mission {GB}) and potential G1 Melbourne Cup participant Tawny Port (Pioneerof the Nile) will put in an appearance.Elite trainers from A to Z–in this case, Asmussen to Ward–will be ever present, as well as top jockeys like Jose Ortiz, Luis Saez and Tyler Gaffalione, who plan to shift their tack from Saratoga post-Travers weekend.Finally, one other piece of big summer news out of the track with massive fields is that they are raising the minimum wager on win, place and show betting from $2 to $5.
