YSRCP slams State government’s decision to shift NIELIT from Tirupati to Mangalagiri - The HinduUpdated - August 28, 2026 09:00 pm IST - TIRUPATITirupati MP Maddila Gurumoorthy said that the State government’s decision to shift the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) from Tirupati to Mangalagiri is a ‘grave injustice’ to Rayalaseema.The institute was temporarily set up at SVU campus in 2022 and the nod for the permanent campus was officially given in January 2024. The Union Ministry of Electronics and IT accorded the administrative approval for setting up the institute with an estimated cost of ₹8.50 crore (MeitY’s contribution ₹6.93 crore and NIELIT’s contribution ₹1.57 crore). A grant-in-aid of ₹1 crore was even released to NIELIT Chennai during the financial year 2023-24 for taking the project forward.Addressing the media here on Friday (August 28, 2026), Dr. Gurumoorthy recalled the painstaking efforts taken by him during the erstwhile YSRCP dispensation in the State to get the reputed institute to Tirupati, which is home to nearly ten universities, national institutes like the IIT, IISER and IIIT Sri City, besides 24 engineering colleges.“Tirupati already has several Electronic Clusters and nearly 1,200 students are getting skill training at the Tirupati centre with the help of NIELIT’s channel partners. Establishing NIELIT in Tirupati will further develop this ecosystem,” Dr. Gurumoorthy said.The project was originally proposed with ₹300 crore, but the Detailed Project Report was sent for ₹180 crore. He recalled the assurances given by the Union Minister for IT Aswani Vaishnaw to set up the institute in Tirupati.While the YSRCP is not averse to the State government bringing new institutes to Amaravati, the party would certainly oppose diversion of projects sanctioned elsewhere to the capital, which would lead to centralisation of facilities in future.
