An airport is essentially an integral part of industrial development and plays a vital role in attracting foreign investment. The Tamil Nadu Government, however, appears not to have pursued the Parandur airport project at the cost of people’s welfare.Chennai is a flood-prone region, so constructing an airport on land containing water bodies is a highly risky proposal. But acquiring a single stretch of land for an airport with minimal impact on agricultural land would be difficult, as such a project typically requires 2,000-3,000 acres of land. For a State like Tamil Nadu, the Government should promote a more geographically dispersed pattern of industrial development by nudging investors and promoters towards locations across the State, rather than concentrating industrial activity in and around Chennai.S LakshminarayananKo Puvanur & Post, TNSpike in sugar pricesThis refers to ‘The real causes of sugar price spike’ (August 28). The government must improve the timely collection and publication of data on production, stocks and consumption. This would reduce uncertainty and make it harder for speculation to thrive. Stock limits and other interventions should be used carefully, since excessive controls can discourage producers and distort normal trade.K SakunthalaCoimbatoreTackling natural disastersThe recent deadly floods and landslide disasters in Nepal emphasise the importance of embracing nature. We have miles to go with regard to tackling natural disasters. The over-exploitation of natural sources usually has ripple effects across regions. Himalayan nations like Nepal, Pakistan and India, and other Asian coastal nations such as Sri Lanka, Thailand, Maldives and Indonesia should join hands for large-scale natural disaster management.
