A Maltese horse sanctuary has issued an urgent appeal to authorities as soaring temperatures hit the islands, claiming it has now spent 330 days without an independent water or electricity supply.Second Chance Horse Rescue said dozens of horses under its care are struggling through the intense heat, with animals spending their days “sweating in stables” without even the possibility of connecting a basic fan.“These are not luxuries we are asking for,” the sanctuary said. “Water and electricity are the MOST basic necessities when you are responsible for the welfare of this many horses.”The organisation stressed that it is not asking for free utilities and is prepared to pay its own water and electricity bills.Instead, it is calling on the authorities to explain what is preventing the sanctuary from being connected to the necessary infrastructure.“Give us a water supply. Give us an electricity supply. Send us the bills and we will pay them,” it said.The situation is also taking its toll on volunteers, who the sanctuary says continue turning up in the heat to clean and manually carry water to every horse.Without electricity, volunteers cannot even refrigerate bottles of water to have a cold drink while working, the organisation said.And walking away when temperatures become unbearable simply isn’t an option when dozens of animals depend on them.“A fan. A cold bottle of water.
