CONGRESS MP and LoP Rahul Gandhi on Saturday urged girl students to “smash patriarchy”, while targeting PM Narendra Modi over his remark that he was shocked to hear girls using abusive language during the students’ protest at Jantar Mantar last month.Gandhi said even though both boys and girls used abusive language during the protest, the PM “felt a cultural shock because girls used such a language”. “If boys abuse, there is no problem, but if a girl abuses, it is a cultural shock,” the Congress leader said. He was referring to a video released by the PM shortly after the CJP ended its Jantar Mantar protest. In the video the PM said he “forgave” the students for the insults.Interacting with students during his Chhatron ki Goonj programme at Pune’s SSPMS Ground, Gandhi said the BJP and the RSS hold a mindset that wants women to be “confined within cages”. “What is the mindset? That a girl should be locked in a cage, she should be controlled, she should not work, and boys should get full freedom. They can do whatever they want, if they want to abuse they can abuse, if they want to work they can work… We do not want such an India,” the Congress leader said.Gandhi also spoke about the various types of violence faced by women in the country. He quoted a verse from the Manusmriti, which says “a woman must obey her father in her childhood, in youth she belongs to her husband, and later she belongs to her sons”.“There is nothing wrong in being a daughter, a wife or a mother. But this cannot be your only identity,” he said.“For thousands of years, women have been denied their rights and entitlements in the country. The Manusmriti rules that women should not be independent, but women must be given freedom… Women must stand on their own feet and build their own identity… You belong to nobody, except yourself. You have a relationship with your father, brother, husband, your son, but you do not belong to them, and you belong to yourself,” he said.During the event, several women, mostly college students, went up on stage and spoke to Gandhi about the issues they face daily. Then there is economic violence… Women are subjected to various forms of control in the country,” he said.
