(Image: @BJP4Bengal/X)West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Monday said that out of the 2.3 lakh people who applied for citizenship under the amended citizenship law (CAA) in the state, 23,000 (or 10 percent) have been issued citizenship certificates so far, and asserted that the hearing of applications will be completed soon.“This was our promise. We are implementing it. As a result, Hindu refugees who have applied for citizenship will be issued certificates quickly,” the chief minister told mediapersons at Nabanna, the state secretariat.Notably, only a few days ago, the Centre had issued guidelines assigning the responsibility of issuing citizenship certificates to the district magistrates.“Through the district magistrates, we will act quickly. Of the 2.30 lakh people, 23,000 have received certificates. And those who have not yet applied will still be able to do so. We will also be able to complete the hearings swiftly and issue certificates to Hindu refugees who came from Bangladesh due to religious persecution,” Adhikari added.“Our Hindu refugees, the Matua community, who have long been waiting in hope and brought us to power, will receive the certificates from me. The Government of India has entrusted this responsibility to me,” he added.The chief minister also denied allegations of discrimination in transferring money to women beneficiaries of the Annapurna cash-transfer scheme. “Those who are eligible will receive the money (under the Annapurna scheme). Out of nearly 1.45 crore beneficiaries, 19.2 lakh are Muslim families. We do not discriminate. The government has records of what appeasement was practised during the previous (TMC) administration. One lakh eligible women beneficiaries in the Hills of Darjeeling have received financial assistance,” Adhikari said amid reports of protests by women in several parts of the state over non-payment of the scheme money.‘No problem in JU’Reacting to the last weekend’s clashes on Jadavpur University campus that took place between ABVP, the RSS’ students’ wing, and the CPI(M)’s SFI, the chief minister said, “Normal classes have been held at Jadavpur University. There is no problem there. This will not be tolerated here. One must engage in nationalist activities.
