Infrastructure Malta will plant 75 new trees in the Triq Bur il-Kbir area in Siġġiewi as part of environmental measures linked to the road-widening project currently underway.The project is intended to address traffic congestion and improve road safety, with works including the widening of the carriageway and reconstruction of rubble walls.A total of 15 young cypress trees will be removed, with 75 new trees planted in their place – equivalent to five new trees for every cypress tree removed.Of the 75 new trees, 21 will be cypress trees and 54 will be olive trees.In the field where the existing cypress trees will be removed, Infrastructure Malta will replant 21 cypress trees to preserve the landscape characteristics and vegetation previously found in the area.Another 54 olive trees will be planted nearby, increasing the number of trees and the environmental value of the area.Infrastructure Malta will be responsible for supplying and planting all the trees, while their maintenance following planting will be entrusted to the new owners of the fields.The intervention reflects a commitment to ensuring that investment in road infrastructure is accompanied by concrete environmental measures.While the works along Triq Bur il-Kbir are considered necessary to improve safety and connectivity, the project’s planning also includes measures aimed at increasing the number of trees in the area.Therefore, while 15 cypress trees will be removed, the area will gain 75 new trees from two different species, contributing towards a greener environment and a richer rural landscape in Siġġiewi.What do you make of this?•
