Labour MP Ramona Attard has issued a strongly worded reaction to the controversial Nadur rape case, questioning the Church’s handling of the case and telling victims of abuse to instead turn to professionals or the police.In a lengthy Facebook post, Attard said she had read the court judgment concerning allegations that a girl was sexually abused by four men, describing what emerged as “shocking”.Her reaction came after Gozo Bishop Anton Teuma confirmed that no canonical action would be taken against Fr Michael Said following two investigations. Teuma acknowledged that the priest had influenced the family’s decision to drop the case, describing his intervention at the time as “not wise”, while saying it did not amount to intentional pressure.Attard highlighted that Fr Said is related to some of the men who had been accused, questioning why this detail was not included in the Church’s statement.“Seriously? Where is the protection of minors?” Attard wrote.She questioned what assurance exists that other children were not harmed after the four accused remained free, while also raising concerns about whether the priest continues to operate in environments where minors experiencing similar trauma could approach him.Attard then questioned what message the Church’s decision sends to other victims of sexual abuse who may still be trying to find the courage to speak out.“Following what the Bishop said today, my advice is clear: do not go to the Church to report abuse. Go to other professionals or to the Police,” she wrote.Attard also offered her own professional assistance, under confidentiality, to people experiencing such trauma.She ended by insisting that anyone who sexually abuses a minor must be held accountable, receive appropriate professional intervention and, above all, “be kept away from children.”What do you make of her statement?•
