Stanbic Bank Uganda has thrown its weight behind the second edition of the Independence Marathon, calling on Ugandans to use sport to support the fight against maternal mortality. The marathon, scheduled for Sunday, October 4, will run under the theme “Save a Mother”, with proceeds going towards strengthening maternal health services at Mengo Hospital. During a visit to the hospital, Diana Ondoga, manager, Corporate and Social Investment at Stanbic Bank Uganda, said the partnership demonstrates how sport can mobilise communities around important national causes. The race will bring together professional and amateur runners, corporate teams, families and members of the public. Mandela National Stadium will serve as both the start and finish point, with the Northern Bypass providing a professionally managed and timed route. Uganda’s maternal mortality ratio stands at 207 deaths per 100,000 live births, according to the 2024 National Population and Housing Census, down from 336 per 100,000 in 2016.
